Well, the fact is, most Rondenos do their drinking at home, then come out to party. Many young adults in Ronda also prefer pre-mixed sangria in 1.5 liter plastic bottles. Not much duende in that, I'm afraid. But it is MUCH cheaper by the liter than by the 200 ml glass. My larger point is that plastic sangria bottles today have now replaced the iconic bota bag, also known as the Spanish leather wineskin.
Sangria Now Sold in 1.5L Plastic Bottles in Spain.
This change from wineskin to plastic was set in motion several motion several years ago. Throughout Europe, producers of beer, distilled spirits and soft drinks began selling product in large plastic containers. Spain has gone along, too. Now you see 1.5 liter plastic bottles of sangria, wine and beer at futbol matches, summer concerts and pop-up celebrations all over Spain. The leather wine skin is dead. Replaced by the cheap plastic bottle.
In Ronda, Sangria Don Simon is one popular brand of pre-mixed sangria, judging from the hundreds of plastic sangria bottles ... and I do mean HUNDREDS ... that littered Ronda's streets after one celebration in September 2010. So if you still have a leather wineskin, hold on to it. One day, it may fetch a fortune as a collectible on E-Bay.
